Recreational Boating Deaths Up

More than more than 700 deaths last year; $36 million in property damage

Recent statistics about boating deaths in 2009 are a painful reminder of just how much of an impact even the most basic precautions could have.

According to the latest figures from the Coast Guard, there were 736 boating deaths last year. Nearly 75 percent of the people who died drowned and 84 percent of those victims were not wearing a life vest. In addition, only 14 percent of the deaths reported occurred on boats that were being driven by an operator who had taken a boating safety class.

“Nearly 75 percent of the 736 people who died in boating accidents in 2009 drowned, and 84 percent of those victims reportedly were not wearing a life jacket,” says Rear Admiral Kevin Cook, Coast Guard Director of Prevention Policy. “The two most important things boaters can do to prevent the loss of life is to wear a life jacket and take a boater education course.”

The statistics are included in, “Recreational Boating Statistics 2009,” compiled by the Coast Guard Office of Auxiliary and Boating Safety.  The report says that the proportion of people who died in boating accidents last year represented an increase of 3.81 percent over the previous year. However, the report notes that even though the number of boating accident deaths increased, there was actually a slight reduction of 1.23 percent in the number of boating accidents. 

Recreational boating safety statistics have been published by the Coast Guard for 51 years. Some additional highlights of the current report include the following:

• There were a total of 4,730 recreational boating accidents in 2009 that resulted in 736 deaths, 3,358 injuries and $36 million in property damage.

• The top five primary contributing factors for boating accidents were operator inattention, operator inexperience, excessive speed, improper lookout and alcohol use. Alcohol use was also cited as the leading contributing cause of fatal boating accidents (16 percent).

• About 70 percent of all boating-related deaths occurred on boats that were less than 21 feet in length.

• Boats most commonly involved in accidents were open motorboats (46%), personal watercraft (22%) and cabin motorboats (14%).

Among states, Florida reported the most accidents and fatalities, at 420 and 67 respectively. California reported 393 accidents and 47 deaths, while Texas was third, with 125 accidents and 38 deaths. Also noteworthy were Michigan, with 89 accidents and 36 deaths; Louisiana, with 112 accidents and 33 deaths; Virginia, 91 accidents and 27 deaths; and Maryland, 141 accidents and 17 deaths.
