Well, I have been neglecting this blog lately. I don’t have much of an excuse… just busy, I guess.Anyway, I couldn’t resist this. We’re starting to explore the use of SecondLife at Wheaton. In fact, we have some time set aside this afternoon to do a little exploring. Unfortunately, one of the main mcpd questions features that allows you to explore—the place search in SL—seems to be down at the moment. I think Linden Labs is having a bit of trouble after their recent upgrade. So, I went off looking for some good slurl’s (Second Life locations) on the web and found this Wired article, published in vmware certification October 2006—a great primer for noobs like myself. If I don’t have time this afternoon to explore these places, I will definitely be there tonight. After purchasing and killing Prometheus in 2002 and WebCT last year (and many other companies, though not strictly speaking CMS/LMS companies), Blackboard seems to have a long-term strategy of not developing good or original technology but buying competitors and, now it is clear, trying to keep others out of the field by getting an absurdly broad patent for common uses of technology ccvp if that technology is employed in the context of education. Not only do we need to worry about the future of open source initiatives such as Moodle and Sakai, but we also need to worry about using a blog or wiki with a class of students. In fact, simple networking protocols, authentication practices, and the like, if undertaken by a school could well be jeapordized by this patent.
