  • Golfweek Picks Punta Espada, Again

    Inland Boater Magazine

Cap Cana, Dominican Republic – Punta Espada golf course at Cap Cana has been named the best course in the Caribbean and Mexico for 2010 by Golfweek magazine.

The course also earned the top spot last year and in 2008 it was named the third best course in the Caribbean and Mexico by Golfweek. The rest of the top five courses on the magazine’s list of the 50 best courses in the region were Mid Ocean, Tucker’s Town, Bermuda; La Querencia, Los Cabos, Mexico; Teeth of the Dog, Casa De Campo, Dominican Republic; and Royal Westmoreland, St. James, Barbados.

“We are very proud to have the best golf course in the Caribbean and Mexico. This recognition and the beauty of the area confirm this,” said Ricardo Hazoury, Chairman of the Board of Directors at Cap Cana. “This is not only a distinction for Cap Cana, but for the Dominican Republic, because with this type of acknowledgement we have reached the international stage as a major new golf destination.”

The 7,000-year par 72 seaside course is home to the Cap Cana Championship, a stop on the PGA Champions Tour. Punta Espada earned this distinction in 2008, becoming the first Caribbean course to host a Champions Tour event since the Puerto Rico Senior Tournament of Champions at the Hyatt Dorado Beach East Course in 1996.

Since its opening in November 1996, Punta Espada has also been named one of the top 10 golf courses in the Caribbean by Forbes and one of the 100 best courses in the world by Golf Digest. It is the first of three Jack Nicklaus Signature Golf Courses completed at Cap Cana.

The second course, Las Iguanas, is still under construction, with the first nine holes scheduled to open soon. The third course will be situated in an upland area in the 37,000-acre luxury resort and community on the easternmost point of the Dominican Republic.
