15th Annual Plywood Regatta Set for Dania Beach
Event Proceeds to Benefit Education Programs, Scholarship Fund
Youths participate in a “heat” during the 2010 Plywood Regatta in Dania Beach
FORT LAUDERDALE, FL – The 15th Plywood Regatta, a two-day event designed to introduce youths to boat building and the joy of recreational boating, is scheduled for April 30 – May 1 at the Dania Beach City Marina.
On April 30, about 40 teams of middle school, high school and marine technical school students will attempt to build sea-worthy vessels, using simple hand tools and only the supplied materials of plywood, 3M 5200 fast cure caulk and zip ties. Once the boats are complete students will then paint and decorate. On Sunday, May 1, participants will compete in a series of heats to determine a champion.
“The Plywood Regatta is such a unique event because it encompasses so many aspects of the marine industry from design to fabrication to painting,” said Melanie Daily, Public Relations and Events Coordinator for the Marine Industries Association of South Florida, which holds the Regatta. “Participating in the event is a great way for these students, particularly those in the Marine Magnet and engineering programs, to get a taste of what careers they could eventually pursue in the marine industry after graduation.”
All proceeds from the Plywood Regatta will benefit South Florida’s marine industry education programs and the Plywood Regatta Scholarship Fund. The aim of these programs is to encourage marine education and develop students’ interest in the marine industry.
The Marine Industries Association of South Florida is a not-for-profit trade organization created to promote and protect the marine industry in south Florida. The Association has 800 members in Broward, Miami-Dade and Palm Beach Counties and is the owner of the Fort Lauderdale International Boat Show.
